What Is the Cheapest Way to Ship a Car Without Cutting Corners?
By Genius Auto Trans · 7 minute read
The short answer: The cheapest way to ship a car is open transport, door to door, with a flexible pickup window, booked outside the May–June peak and against the seasonal flow on your lane. Those four choices lower a quote without lowering protection. Skip any low bid that will not commit to a price in writing.

Distance, vehicle and addresses fix most of a quote; you control flexibility. Genius Auto Trans, a licensed auto transport broker (USDOT 3674601 / MC 1274912, Manassas, Virginia), arranges open auto transport and other services with independent, vetted carriers across the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC. We do not ship to Alaska, Hawaii or overseas.
What is the cheapest way to ship a car?
Two terms first. A broker is a company licensed by FMCSA to arrange transportation with an authorized motor carrier; a carrier is the trucking company whose driver and trailer move your car. A pickup window is the range of days in which a carrier commits to collect the car.
The cheapest way to ship a car comes down to four choices, and none of them adds a fee:
- Choose open transport. An open hauler carries several cars, so the truck's cost is shared across the deck. Most daily drivers, SUVs and pickups do not need an enclosed trailer.
- Give a wide pickup window. The more days you offer, the more carriers can fit your car into a trip they are already running.
- Ship off-peak and against the flow. Demand peaks in May and June and is usually lowest in September. On seasonal lanes, the heavy direction prices higher during its peak.
- Make pickup easy for a big truck. Door to door is our default, not a surcharge. If a 75–80 foot hauler cannot reach your street, a meeting point agreed before dispatch keeps the carrier pool wide.
Two more levers: two cars on one booking usually cost less per vehicle than two shipments, and our 10% discounts for military members and veterans, seniors, students and dealers apply when mentioned at the quote stage. For how distance, size and condition move the number, see the seven factors that change a quote.
What does each saving cost you?
None of these choices costs money. Each one costs something else:
| Choice | Why it lowers the quote | What you give up | Skip it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open transport | Truck cost is shared across the deck | Exposure to weather and road grime | The car is a classic, exotic or low-clearance build |
| Wide pickup window | More carriers can fit your car into a planned route | You cannot name the pickup day | You have a fixed report date or lease end |
| Off-peak timing | Less competition for space on the truck | The car may move weeks apart from you | The move date is not yours to choose |
| Easy-access pickup | Full-size haulers can take the load | A short drive to a meeting point | Nobody can meet the driver nearby |
| Two cars, one booking | One trip and one route plan | Both cars must be ready in the same window | The cars start in different cities |
With a fixed date, expedited service raises carrier pay so your load is taken first. It shortens the wait for pickup, not the drive.
When is the best time of year to ship a car?
The best time of year to ship a car is a month when few people are moving in your direction:
- May–June: the busiest stretch of the year.
- Late summer: campus move-ins add demand into college towns.
- September: usually the quietest month.
- October–November: southbound snowbird lanes fill.
- March–May: the northbound snowbird return.
Direction matters as much as the month: Florida to New York in late October runs against the southbound wave. If you split the year between two homes, our snowbird planning guide covers when to book each leg. On any peak lane, booking a few weeks ahead is your main lever.
Is car shipping in winter cheaper?
Not automatically. Car shipping in winter avoids the summer crowd, but holiday weeks thin out drivers and weather slows trucks. The Federal Highway Administration reports freeway speeds drop 3 to 13 percent in light snow and 5 to 40 percent in heavy snow.
Mountain passes add hard stops. In California, heavy-duty commercial vehicles must install chains whenever chain controls are posted, and Caltrans sends trucks without chains back to a lower elevation until weather improves. To plan around that:
- Offer a wider pickup window than you would in summer.
- Charge the battery; a car that will not start in the cold needs a winch-equipped carrier.
- Ask for a daylight delivery so you can inspect before signing.
- Expect road salt on open transport. It washes off; enclosed suits the same cars in winter as in summer.
Which savings end up costing more?
- A low quote that is not a commitment. A price set to win the booking can sit unclaimed if no carrier takes the load. With us, the price agreed at booking is the price you pay; under our six-step booking process, the balance is paid at delivery, after you have seen the car.
- Terminal-to-terminal on the wrong lane. Two trips to a terminal and any storage fees often eat the savings; our door-to-door service explains the meeting-point alternative.
- Packing the car with belongings. Personal items are not covered by the carrier's cargo insurance.
- Calling a non-running car "running." If the carrier arrives without a winch, the pickup fails.
- Driving it yourself. Count fuel, lodging, meals, days off work, a flight home and miles on the car.
Three cheapest-way planning examples
These are planning scenarios on real lanes—not customer stories, prices, transit estimates or guarantees.
Virginia to California in January
A Manassas owner moving to Sacramento books Virginia to California transport on an open hauler, offers a wide window because the route may cross chain-control passes, and asks for a daylight delivery.
Florida to New York in late October
A Tampa owner moving to Albany books the Florida to New York lane while the seasonal crowd heads south, with a meeting point near the highway at both ends.
Texas to California in September
A Houston household moving to Los Angeles ships a minivan and a pickup on one open booking in September. Both run, both are empty, and both are ready in the same window.
Cheapest way to ship a car: FAQs
What is the cheapest month to ship a car?
September is usually the quietest month for car shipping, while May and June are the busiest. Your lane matters too: southbound routes to winter destinations fill in October and November, and northbound routes fill from March to May. Pick a month when few people ship in your direction.
Is terminal-to-terminal shipping cheaper than door-to-door?
Sometimes, on some lanes, but the savings often disappear. You drive to a terminal at each end, and storage fees can apply if the car waits. Door-to-door is the default for most shipments; if a hauler cannot reach your street, you meet the driver at a nearby agreed spot.
Is it cheaper to drive or ship a car?
Compare the full cost of driving with a written quote, not fuel alone. Add lodging, meals, days off work, a flight or ride back, and the wear and miles on the car. A long drive also costs days that shipping leaves free for the rest of the move.
Does a cheaper car shipping quote mean less insurance?
Not necessarily. The assigned carrier's cargo insurance covers the car in transit whatever the price, and you can ask for the carrier's certificate before pickup. The real risk of a very low quote is that no carrier accepts the load, so the car waits or the price changes.
How much does it cost to ship a car?
We do not publish prices because each quote depends on the shipment. Distance and lane density, vehicle size, open or enclosed trailer, running condition, season, pickup flexibility and access at both ends all change the number. The price agreed at booking is the price you pay.
Get a quote built around your flexibility
Send your earliest pickup date, how many days you can flex, both ZIP codes and whether the car runs. A named coordinator will price the shipment and tell you if you are paying for something you do not need.
