Look them up in the FMCSA SAFER system. It is free, public and takes about a minute — you will see whether the authority is active, whether it is broker or carrier authority, and what the safety record looks like.
Do the same for every company you are considering. One that will not give you its USDOT and MC numbers has answered a question you did not have to ask.
What broker authority means
A carrier owns trucks and runs a fixed set of lanes. If your route and dates happen to match, that works well. If they do not, you wait.
A broker does not own trucks and so has no equipment to defend. Our job is to find the carrier whose route, equipment and timing actually fit your shipment, and to verify it before your vehicle is handed over.
We are a licensed and bonded broker, not the carrier. Every carrier we assign is required to hold active cargo insurance, and we will provide that carrier's certificate on request.
