Can You Ship Multiple Cars on One Truck? What Has to Line Up First
By Genius Auto Trans · 7 minute read
The short answer: Yes. You can ship multiple cars on one truck when they share a pickup area, a destination area and a pickup window, and when they need the same type of trailer. Booking them together on one order usually prices better per vehicle than separate bookings, but each car still gets its own inspection and bill of lading.

Two cars in one driveway headed to one new address is the simplest multi-vehicle move a carrier sees. Genius Auto Trans arranges most of these on open car carriers, where the cost of running the truck is shared across every vehicle on the deck. The harder cases are cars at two addresses, a motorcycle in the garage or one car that should ride enclosed. Here is what has to line up before you ship multiple cars together.
Can you ship multiple cars on one truck?
Usually, yes. Two-level open haulers carry the most vehicles per trip, smaller open trailers take three to five, and enclosed multi-car trailers a handful. To ship multiple cars on one truck, the carrier needs that many open positions on your lane at the same time. A truck with two open spots takes two cars; a third may ride the next truck through.
- Broker: a company registered with FMCSA to arrange transport with an authorized motor carrier; it does not haul the vehicle.
- Carrier: the licensed trucking company that loads, hauls and insures your vehicles in transit.
- Bill of lading: the receipt and condition report signed at pickup and delivery, one per vehicle.
What has to line up to ship two cars at once?
Six factors decide whether vehicles move as one load. When one splits, the order can stay one booking, but the truck plan changes.
| Factor | Lines up | Splits | What usually happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pickup | One driveway or lot | Two addresses or cities | An extra stop if it is on the route; otherwise separate pickups |
| Delivery | One address | Two or more drop points | Multi-stop delivery or separate carriers |
| Timing | All ready the same day | One car needed until later | Staggered pickups, often on different trucks |
| Trailer | All open or all enclosed | One open, one enclosed | Two carriers, two schedules |
| Condition | Running cars of similar size | Lifted, lowered or non-running | A carrier with the winch, ramps or deck space that unit needs |
| Ownership | One owner, keys in hand | Different owners, leased or financed | Authorization and a contact per vehicle before dispatch |
Common outcomes, not rules; the assigned carrier confirms the plan before dispatch.
Street access matters too. States must allow traditional automobile transporters at least 65 feet, or 75 feet stinger-steered, before overhang (23 CFR 658.13), so a second pickup on a narrow block may need a meeting point agreed before dispatch.
If one car must stay until the last day, our guide to timing car shipping around moving day shows how to stagger two vehicles.
Is it cheaper to ship multiple cars together?
Per vehicle, usually yes. Fuel, driver time and miles are spent on the trip either way, so cars loaded at one stop share them.
- Strongest case: two running cars of similar size, one pickup, one delivery, a flexible window.
- Weaker case: a sedan paired with a heavy-duty pickup, or cars leaving a week apart.
- No real case: one car open and one enclosed, which are two shipments on two trailers.
Dealers moving inventory can use our dealer and auction transport service, which applies a 10% dealer discount. Households can see our guide to lowering a car shipping quote without cutting corners.
Can you ship a car and motorcycle together?
Often, and one booking can cost less than two separate shipments on the same lane, but the bike loads differently. Through our motorcycle shipping service, a bike rides upright on soft straps attached to motorcycle-specific tie-down points, with the suspension partly compressed.
- Trailer: enclosed is our standard recommendation for motorcycles, so decide whether the car rides enclosed too or the bike ships alone.
- Fuel and bags: leave about a quarter tank and empty the saddlebags; cargo insurance does not cover personal items.
- Same truck: one booking does not always mean one trailer, so confirm it at quote stage.
A single collector bike may suit a motorcycle-only specialist better; we will say so.
What paperwork does each vehicle need?
One order does not mean one inspection. Each vehicle gets its own condition record on the bill of lading, and any damage claim is measured against it, as our step-by-step booking and inspection process explains. For each vehicle, have ready:
- Keys: one full set, tagged with the car it belongs to.
- Photos: dated, from every angle, taken after a wash.
- A contact: you or an authorized adult at every pickup and delivery address.
- Ownership: a registration or title copy; for a leased or financed car, check whether your agreement requires notice before it leaves the state.
Each automobile, light truck or van weighing 10,000 lb or less must be restrained at the front and rear using a minimum of two tiedowns (49 CFR 393.128), so every car on your order is strapped and checked on its own.
What should a multi-car quote request include?
When you ship multiple cars, send everything on one request:
- Year, make and model of every vehicle, motorcycles included.
- Running condition and modifications for each one.
- Pickup and delivery city and ZIP for each vehicle, even when they match.
- The earliest ready date for each vehicle and your flexibility.
- Open or enclosed preference, and whether the vehicles must travel together.
Genius Auto Trans, a licensed auto transport broker, USDOT 3674601 / MC 1274912, Manassas, Virginia, uses that list to find a carrier with active authority, cargo insurance and open positions on your lane. A cargo limit usually applies to the whole load, not each car, so ask for the certificate of insurance when several vehicles are valuable.
Three multi-car shipping planning examples
These are planning scenarios, not customer stories, prices, transit estimates or guarantees.
Virginia to Florida: two household cars from one driveway
A Fairfax County household sends a sedan and a midsize SUV from one driveway to one Tampa address. Both run and are ready the same morning, the simplest way to ship multiple cars.
Ohio to Texas: a crossover and a touring motorcycle
A Columbus owner moves a crossover and a touring bike to Austin and wants the bike enclosed, so the request asks whether both can share one enclosed trailer.
New Jersey to North Carolina: two pickups, one delivery
Two cars start about 50 miles apart, in Hoboken and Princeton, and end at one Raleigh address. The Hoboken street is too tight for a long hauler, so a meeting point is agreed before dispatch.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ship two cars at once if they are at different addresses?
Yes, if both addresses sit near the carrier's route. Each extra pickup adds loading time and miles, so the pickup window may widen, and a stop far off the route can mean a second carrier. List every address and ZIP code on the request.
Will all my cars arrive on the same day?
Only if they ride the same truck to the same address, and even then delivery dates are estimates, not guarantees. Vehicles split across carriers, or one moving enclosed, can arrive on different days. Say which vehicle you need first so it can go on the earliest truck.
Can one car ship open and another enclosed on the same order?
Yes, on one order, but not usually on one trailer. Open and enclosed vehicles move on different equipment, so they become two shipments with two carriers, two pickup windows and two bills of lading. To keep them together, ask whether both can ride enclosed.
Is there a discount to ship multiple cars?
Several vehicles on one lane usually price better per unit than separate bookings because they share one truck trip. Genius Auto Trans also offers 10% discounts for military members and veterans, seniors, students and car dealers; mention eligibility when you request a quote. We quote each shipment, not a rate card.
Does Genius Auto Trans ship multiple cars to Alaska, Hawaii or overseas?
No. Genius Auto Trans arranges multi-vehicle shipments within the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC only. We do not arrange moves to or from Alaska or Hawaii, or any international or overseas shipping. Within that area, a request to ship multiple cars is quoted as one plan.
