Jet Ski Transport: Can Your Personal Watercraft Ship on Its Own Trailer?
By Genius Auto Trans · 7 minute read
The short answer: Yes. Jet ski transport usually works best with the personal watercraft strapped to its own roadworthy trailer, which the carrier either tows or loads onto a deck. Without one, the carrier supplies a trailer or a cradle on a flatbed. Drain all water, disconnect the battery, measure the loaded height and width, and plan for watercraft inspection stations out West.

A personal watercraft looks like an easy load until the trailer tires crack, the hull still holds lake water, or the route hits an inspection station nobody planned for. Genius Auto Trans arranges jet ski transport through the same boat and oversize transport service it uses for larger hulls, so the questions are the same: what the craft sits on, how big the load is and what the route crosses.
How does jet ski transport work: own trailer, carrier trailer or flatbed?
The trailer decides the method. A craft already on a sound trailer is the simplest case; one that lives on a dock lift needs the carrier to supply what it rides on.
| Setup | How it moves | Best for | What you supply | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your trailer, towed | Carrier hitches and tows it | A craft on a roadworthy trailer | Registered trailer, working lights, sound tires | Failing the driver's check stops pickup |
| Your trailer, on a deck | Strapped onto a flatbed or step-deck | Long hauls | Same, plus length with tongue | Deck adds to loaded height |
| Carrier-supplied trailer | Trailer sized to the hull | No trailer, or an unfit one | Hull length, beam, weight | Extra lead time to match |
| Cradled on a flatbed | Blocked and strapped on a cradle | No trailer available | A cradle, or ask the carrier | Cradle fit quoted separately |
Two craft on one double trailer move as a single load, so say how many craft the trailer carries when you ask for a quote.
Three terms come up on every booking. A broker arranges the move with an authorized motor carrier but does not haul it. The carrier is the licensed trucking company that hauls the craft and whose cargo insurance covers it in transit. The bill of lading is the receipt and condition report signed at pickup and at delivery.
Is your jet ski trailer ready for a long haul?
Most PWC trailers do short ramp runs, then sit for months. Highway miles are a different job, and the driver inspects the trailer before hitching. Check these a week ahead:
- Registration current and plate mounted.
- Tires: tread, pressure, no sidewall cracking, and a fitting spare.
- Wheel bearings serviced if you cannot remember when they last were.
- Lights: brake, turn and tail lights work; plug not corroded.
- Coupler and chains latch and hold.
- Winch strap and transom straps unfrayed and holding the hull down.
- Brakes, if fitted, work.
If it will not pass, a carrier-supplied trailer is the fallback; tell us early, not on pickup day.
How do you prepare a jet ski for transport?
- Drain it per the owner's manual, and winterize the cooling system if the route crosses freezing temperatures.
- Clean weeds, mud and shells off the hull, bunks and intake grate.
- Disconnect the battery and secure the cable ends.
- Run the fuel low and ask at booking what level the carrier wants.
- Empty the compartments; personal items are not covered by cargo insurance.
- Use a highway-rated cover or none; mooring covers tear loose.
- Keep the lanyard or key unless the carrier asks for it to move the craft.
- Take dated photos, including the hull bottom and existing scratches.
Tie-downs belong on the bow eye and stern eyes, not the handlebars, seat or plastic panels.
What measurements does a jet ski transport quote need?
Measure rather than copy a brochure; racks and trailer fenders change the numbers:
- Overall length, coupler to stern.
- Width at the widest point, often the fenders.
- Loaded height, ground to highest point.
- Weight of craft and trailer.
- Number of craft and trailer type.
Federal rules set a 102-inch width limit for vehicles on the National Network (23 CFR 658.15). A trailered PWC is normally well inside that, so permits rarely apply; height matters more when the trailer rides on a deck.
What paperwork should you have ready?
Have these ready before dispatch:
- Hull identification number (HIN): the unique number that identifies the hull. Federal rules place it on the starboard side of the transom within two inches of the top, or within one foot of the stern on hulls without a transom (33 CFR 181.29).
- Registration or title for the craft and trailer.
- Names and numbers of whoever releases and receives it.
- The carrier's certificate of insurance, on request.
Genius Auto Trans, a licensed auto transport broker, USDOT 3674601 / MC 1274912, Manassas, Virginia, checks each carrier's active FMCSA authority and cargo insurance before assignment. Our six-step booking and inspection process shows when the bill of lading is signed.
Where can a jet ski be picked up and delivered?
Most jet ski transport runs door to door: a driveway, storage yard or marina lot. A towing truck or flatbed needs room to turn, so mention tight streets, gates and HOA rules. If the truck cannot reach the address, a nearby meeting point is agreed before dispatch.
Marinas keep business hours and may need appointments. For a craft on a dock lift with no trailer, our guide on shipping a boat without a trailer covers lift scheduling. Delivery is to land only. We serve the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC, with no Alaska, Hawaii or international shipments.
Three jet ski transport planning examples
These are planning scenarios, not customer stories, prices, transit estimates or guarantees.
Texas to Colorado: one craft on its own trailer
A Dallas-area owner moves one PWC to a Colorado lake house. They service the trailer bearings, hand the craft over clean, drained and dry, and plan its Colorado inspection before the first launch. Lane details are on the Texas to Colorado route page.
Michigan to Florida: two craft on a double trailer
Two craft ship on one double trailer in November. With freezing nights likely at pickup, both cooling systems are winterized per the manuals. See the Michigan to Florida route for the corridor.
Virginia to South Carolina: no trailer
A craft on a Virginia Beach dock lift has no trailer. The owner sends hull length, beam and weight and books a marina lift; the carrier supplies a trailer.
Frequently asked questions
Can a jet ski be shipped without a trailer?
Yes. If the craft has no trailer, or its trailer is not fit for a long haul, the carrier can supply a trailer sized to the hull or carry it cradled on a flatbed. Send the hull length, beam and weight, and confirm how it will be lifted at pickup.
Can two jet skis ship on one trailer?
Yes. Two personal watercraft on one roadworthy double trailer move as a single load. Give the overall length, width, loaded height and combined weight, drain and strap both hulls, note any racks or accessories left on either craft, and photograph each one separately before pickup.
Does a jet ski need a permit for road transport?
Rarely. Federal rules set a 102-inch width limit for vehicles on the National Network, and a single or double PWC trailer is normally well within it. Permits mainly concern wide boats. Still measure the width at the fenders and the loaded height.
Do jet skis have to stop at invasive species inspection stations during transport?
Plan for it. Colorado requires all trailered or motorized watercraft, Jet Skis included, to be professionally inspected, and Idaho says all watercraft must stop at every open station along the route. Hand the craft over clean, drained and dry so inspections go quickly.
Does Genius Auto Trans ship jet skis to Alaska, Hawaii or overseas?
No. Genius Auto Trans arranges jet ski and personal watercraft transport within the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC only. We do not arrange shipments to or from Alaska or Hawaii, international moves or delivery on the water; carriers deliver to a land address or marina lot.
